The Challenge

Our team recently received video equipment to capture innovative instruction and PD occurring throughout the district. Our goal is to create and share engaging high-quality videos that exemplify the great instruction in our district.

Neal Kellogg, our administrator, encourages a growth mindset among our department and pushes us to go beyond our comfort zones. He stumbled upon the Video for Educators Course which emphasized Adobe Premiere. He requested that we complete this 25 hour course as a team. The end goal was to increase our proficiency with the tool.

The Process

This course required us to complete a journal entry after each assignment using Adobe Spark. We get a lot of questions about manipulating and annotating PDf or Adobe files. Portable Document Files or PDFs are a common file format but are not as easily manipulated as Word or Docs. Many teachers have found that while you can convert a PDF to a DOC file, it will contain errors that will need to be addressed before it can be used.

So what is the best way for teachers and Students to annotate PDF files?

Adobe Reader is free and available through the Symantec portal and will allow users to open, view, print, and annotate PDF files. Adobe Reader will allow users to add text, shapes, highlight, comment, and mark on PDF files. Teachers can also create official signatures that include timestamps. Adobe Acrobat is the paid version of Reader and allows users greater editing tools, but requires a license. For additional information on annotating in Adobe Reader, click here.

*If a teacher is required by the district to sign a PDF, it must be done in Adobe reader and the instructions can be found here.
Another option for annotating PDFs is Kami

Kami allows teachers and students to highlight, add shapes, add text, print, and save PDF files. Teachers can annotate and share through Google Classroom or Drive, or students can annotate themselves. While Kami lacks some of the editing functions of Acrobat, there is a paid version of KAMI that has additional tools that are noted with the padlock on the menu screen.

KAMI is available as a chrome extension or as a website that links to Google Drive and Google Classroom. Once Kami is added as an extension, it will be an option to open a PDF file under the “open with” drop down.

Kami’s controls are mostly self-explanatory and bring users many annotating features in a free and easy to use format.

Need help with Kami? This link will take users to the Kami Youtube channel for step by step instructions.

*There are several online options that will allow PDF editing/annotating or file conversion, but many lack the function and convenience of Adobe/Kami or are loaded with ads. It is not recommended that teachers use website or downloadable PDF editing options due to malware risks.

Which path will you take?

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">As an educator, the new year can present new possibilities for both you and your students. You just need to be open-minded, be <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">willing to <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">take a chance and make a decision to follow a path or two or three. What possibilities lie on your path?

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">New Learning<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-weight: normal; text-align: justify;"> - You want students to love learning, get excited about new ideas, and become lifelong learners - right? If you 100% agree with this statement, then ask yourself - <i style="font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif; text-align: justify;">Am I learning something new<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-weight: normal; text-align: justify;">? Educators know that modeling is crucial to teaching. If as educators, we are not learning and excited about learning, how can we expect it from our students? Actions speak louder than words! Get excited - and share your goals with your students.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">New Tools - What new tools would you like to learn? What tools could make you more organized and reduce redundancy in your work? D<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">o you feel proficient in using the free GSuite tools available to you?

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">New Methods - Do you struggle with classroom management? Do you have new devices that you are not quite sure how to implement effectively?
Check out the new website dedicated to information about Managing the Digital Classroom. There is a wealth of information addressing issues from classroom setup to a checklist to help you determine whether or not you are device ready.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">New Mindset - From time to time, we all need a new start. Remember, we're all a work in progress and just because we don't understand something now, doesn't mean we won't understand it ever. This applies to both educators and our students. Students need to hear that although they may not have the understanding needed yet, with our support and a new start, not yet can become very powerful! In this video, Carol Dweck talks more about this power of yet.

What is Project Based Learning (PBL)?

"Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem or challenge." ("What is PBL?, 2018")
You can find more information about Project Based Learning here.

As I help teachers implement Project Based Learning (PBL) in their classrooms, the first conversation we have is the difference between projects and PBL. If you are interested in PBL, the info-graphic below is a great resource to help you plan and reflect.
Computers are everywhere, changing every industry on the planet. But fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. Good news is, we at OKCPS are on our way to changing this! If you've heard about the Hour of Code before, you might know it made history. More than 100 million students have tried an Hour of Code.

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: dimgrey; font-family: "Gotham 4r", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo!, and Disney. Over 100 partners have joined together to support this movement. Every Apple Store in the world has hosted an Hour of Code, and leaders like former President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote their first lines of code as part of this movement.

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: dimgrey; font-family: "Gotham 4r", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
This year, let's make it even bigger. I’m asking you to join the Hour of Code 2018 at OKCPS. Please get involved with an Hour of Code event during Computer Science Education Week, December 3-7.

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: dimgrey; font-family: "Gotham 4r", sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Get the word out, host an event for your students, or try the Hour of Code yourself—everyone can benefit from learning the basics, and together we can spark the interest in computer science!

Teaching Citizenship in the Digital Age

Not so long ago, teaching students the importance of good citizenship amounted to topics surrounding community and government involvement, as well as their responsibilities within these groups. Discussions were held and lessons were delivered about how movements throughout the years have changed the course of history and how people can make a difference by exercising their duty to vote.

While these are still crucially important topics to be taught today, the topic of citizenship has grown to also include behaviors and responsibilities in our digital world. Educators and parents alike must recognize and address the need to teach students today about how to become responsible citizens in both the digital and non-digital world. If we ignore this pressing need, we fail our students now and possibly for generations to come. If we don't teach them good habits at a young age, they will certainly learn through mistakes later. In most situations and subjects, I strongly believe that mistakes offer an incredible opportunity for learning. However, mistakes of a digital citizenship nature can have lasting effects on all involved parties and are not mistakes from which I wish to see students learn.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">If you doubt the need to educate students about the importance of digital citizenship, just search for how social media posts can affect job or college applications - you might be surprised! According to a 2018 CareerBuilder survey, 70% of employers use social media to screen candidates during the hiring process.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Technology has dramatically changed the way we study, work, collaborate, and socialize. It can be a powerful tool, but we must make sure our students today - leaders tomorrow - learn to use it respectfully to create a brighter future.
Many blogs ago there was a post about HyperDocs and how amazingly awesome they are. HyperDocs are digital lessons that you give to students for engaging, inquiry-based learning. You can learn all about HyperDocs here. I would advise that you set aside some time to explore, the clicking can take you down a rabbit hole.

HyperDocs aren't just for the classroom, for example, our team recently facilitated a session over Gmail and we used a HyperDoc to share the information with our participants. You can find our HyperDoc here.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I was never what you might call an “early
adopter” of technology. I had to be forced to use a smartphone and didn’t join
social media of any kind until 2015. But last spring, I joined the ETS team
because I was compelled to do more for teachers and students. This meant I had
to learn a LOT to be able to introduce teachers to the newest technologies and
how to use these new tools in the classroom. Now I have to be more than just an
early adopter, I have to be an active researcher, creator, and consumer of
technology. And let me tell you, it has been a total education game changer!

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As we begin this new school year, it may be time for us all to consider becoming “early adopters”, or at least trying just one new tool. Many teachers often find the thought of using digital devices in the classroom to be scary. But I assure you, be not afraid! Using technology is a lot like using a recipe for the first time. It will take a bit of preparation and a little practice, but soon you will be able to do it by memory and even modify the recipe yourself!

Ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once stated, "A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step."

Or, today, we could begin with a single AR/VR tool.

If you haven't yet ventured into using augmented and virtual reality tools, imagine the excitement of bringing literary events to life or exploring underwater caves with your class! Or, using AR to allow new students to explore your school or practice using a combination lock. All of this and much more is available using anything from phones to Chromebooks to projected screens. And, almost as cool as the tools, many are totally FREE!

Here is a quick list of fantastic free tools you can use right away:
The walls are bare, boxes are packed, and keys have been turned in. Hopefully a relaxing summer is on the horizon for you. As educators our minds tend to never drift too far away from our classrooms because we are constantly reflecting and thinking ahead of what's to come.
We encourage you to take this time to rest up because there is so much in store once you return. The ETS team will be presenting during Summer Institute, July 18-20. Our goal is to help you start the upcoming year off right. The session descriptions can be found below. Until then, enjoy your break!
It is widely accepted, administrators are the instructional leaders in their building and can hold great power in inspiring others through good leadership. An article in THE Journal, written by Jennifer Demski, titled "7 Habits of Highly Effective Tech-leading Principals" discusses the findings of a nationwide survey of principals who were asked to weigh in and identify the attributes they believed strong tech-leaders would hold. The survey concluded strong tech-leading principals would do one or more of the following:

Foster collaboration

Something that stands out about Mr. Kellert is the way he leads his teachers by example. It is important to note, Mr. Kellert never asks his staff to implement or try anything he is not willing to do first or alongside his teachers. A great example of this is becoming a Google Certified Educator. Over Spring Break, he invested the time to get his Level 1 Certification as well as several OKCPS ETS Badges. It should also be noted, Ashton Stewart, Assistant Principal at FD Moon Elementary, has also earned Level 1 Certification.

Great leadership creates great leaders. When schools are supported from administration, it trickles down to teachers and ultimately our students. In that scenario, everyone wins. When individuals feel supported and there is a continuous pattern of growth and success.
Marlene White is currently the Instructional Coach at Heronville Elementary and has been an educator for 13 years. As an Instructional Coach she has embraced a variety of digital tools to introduce to her fellow educators and help them fully implement their visions. I had an opportunity to converse with with Marlene about some of the tools she is using and the impact they have in her career.
How has technology changed the way you work?

It has helped me collaborate with educators globally through social media. Apps and software have brought new opportunities for teachers and students to gain knowledge, access opportunities, research in a revolutionary way and foster a love of learning.

What are some great examples of technology integration you are seeing in the classroom?

Google Classroom, shared lesson planning and data digs through google drive, RTI, graphing through google sheets, Trello for lesson planning, apps for individualized instruction and centers for Kindergarten, Flipgrid for formative assessment, Skype for live author interviews, Remind for parent updates, group me for school wide updates, Adobe Spark for hooking kids and building on their prior knowledge.

Share any thoughts you have about the evolving worlds of education.

Ed tech has so many opportunities to personalize how we communicate, how we are shaking up the role of educators, changing philosophical shifts in approaches to our teaching and learning, and remodeling the way we view our classroom.

The Challenge

Marlene has challenged her teachers to use a new tool each month. This month's challenge in Flipgrid. Below are several of the tools she mentioned. The ETS team challenges you to try one of the tools below. We would like your feedback on tools you are currently using in the classroom and how they have impacted your classroom.
